Takeo (武雄市), also Takeo Onsen (武雄温泉), is a city of 49,000 people (2016) in Saga Prefecture, Japan.

Getting there
Takeo is approximately 28 km (17 mi) west of Saga City and approximately 30 km (19 mi) east of Sasebo.
Takeo Onsen Station is the eastern terminus for the Nishi Kyushu Shinkansen. From Nagasaki, the Shinkansen is the fastest way to reach Takeo Onsen Station. The eventual plan is to connect it to Hakata Station however, until then, Limited Express Trains are the fastest way to get here from Hakata Station. There are also Limited Express Trains from Sasebo.
Getting around
Takeo is not completely walkable; buses run from Takeoonsen Station.
What to see
- 1 Takeo Shrine (武雄神社), 5327 Takeo-cho, ☏ . daily 9AM-noon, 1PM-5PM. The shrine is home to The Great Camphor Tree, a 3000-year-old tree sacred tree. It is known as a "power spot" and must be seen to be believed.
- 2 Mifuneyama Rakuen Garden (御船山楽園), 4100 Takeo-cho. 8AM-5PM daily. An expansive garden constructed by the local lord Shigeyoshi Nabeshima in 1845 below Mount Mifune.
- 3 Saga Prefecture Science and Space Museum (佐賀県立宇宙科学館), 16351 Takeo-cho (a 10-minute taxi ride from the station), ☏ . daily 9:15-17:15. Promises science fun for the whole family.
What to do
- 1 Takeo City Library (武雄市図書館), 5304-1 Tekeocho Oaza Takeo (武雄町大字武雄5304番地1), ☏ , epochal@takeo-city-library.jp. daily 9:00-21:00. Do some reading or update your blog at the first library in the world to have a public-private partnership with a large music store chain. When tired, enjoy a Starbucks coffee inside the library. If you have a child, the kids' library (こども図書館) can also satisfy your child.
- 2 Takeo Onsen (武雄温泉). The ancient hot springs are within walking distance of the station and the nightclubs, and you can sleep here if you like. There are three hot springs to choose from.
Where to eat
- 1 Gyoza Kaikan (餃子会館), 武雄町富岡12397-1, ☏ . Friday-Wednesday 11:00~18:00. Eat with the locals at Gyoza Kaikan, 5 minutes from Takeo Station. The gyoza and ramen here are cheap "B-class gourmet," but they're well-known in the area and the atmosphere is always lively. ¥550~¥650 per item.
- 2 Saga Hirakawaya (佐嘉平川屋 武雄温泉本店), 武雄町大字武雄7411, ☏ . 10:00~18:00 (last order: 16:30). A modern building across from Takeo Onsen can make it easy to spot. The restaurant serves Onsen Yudofu (温泉湯豆腐), a tofu dish. The tofu is made with local hot springs, the dish therefore tastes different from a normal tofu stew. Every person must order at least one dish. If it looks too much for you, try their ice cream instead. Although the store set the main shop in Takeo, the store started from Ureshino. If you are going to Ureshino, consider enjoying the dishes there. ¥2,500 or ¥3,000.
Drinking & nightlife
Direct to the station's west, is a street of bars and nightclubs. The American hamburger restaurant there closes at midnight.
Shopping
Most shops in the city are small with a handful of goods. Larger stores in the city are Youme Town (ゆめタウン) and Manga Sogou (マンガ倉庫).

- 1 Central Hotel Takeo. A standard business hotel just beside Takeo Station.
- 2 Tagetsu Taishokan (花月 大正館). Check-in: 15:00-22:00, check-out: 10:00. A historic ryokan that is part of Takeo Onsen.
