Elbasan

Elbasan is a key city for visitors to Korca, Pogradec and North Macedonia. All the travellers from Tirana or other parts of Albania must pass through Elbasan to arrive in North Macedonia through the Qafë-Thana border.

About 45 minute ride from Tirana with the bus through the semi-finished new motorway that is under construction in 2018. Firstly, you have to go to the Terminal to take the bus that is in front of Faculty of Economics University of Tirana, in the "Qyteti Studenti" area, "Arben Broci" street. There is a motorway from Tirana to Elbasan. Elbasan is 55 km away from Tirana International Aeroport. You can take a taxi from there.

All the main important places to visit in Elbasan are near the city center, you can only take a walk and visit.

• 1 St. Bashkia stop. To get to the thermal baths (Llixhat) take the bus from here, east of Elbasan Central Palace. The ticket is 50 lek for the 12 km. (updated Dec 2021)
• 2 Tiranë-Elbasan (Distance), Lagjja "Aqif Pasha". 06:00-20:00. Elbasan is located approximately 45 minutes by bus from the capital Tirana, making it a convenient destination for daily travel. This close proximity facilitates access to a wide range of services, including higher education institutions, shopping centers, and employment opportunities, contributing to strong social and economic ties between the two cities. 200 lek. (updated May 2024)
• Tregu i rrobave (Tek kryqëzimi i Cerrikut). The "Tregu i Rrobave" bus terminal, located near the clothes market on the way to the Cerrik intersection, serves as a key hub in southern Elbasan. It facilitates both local routes within the city and its surrounding villages, such as nerbay, as well as intercity travel to other regional destinations. (updated Apr 2025)

• 1 Elbasan Castle (right at the city centre). Only two ancient walls remain but the area inside is full of old houses and famous personalities houses, cobblestone streets, and an excellent restaurant. One castle wall is centred around the impressive sahati (clock tower). In the center of the castle are two water sources. The two-thousand-year-old Castle of Elbasan, a Roman construction built as early as the 3rd century BC. Foreigners in the 800s noted that cities like Elbasan no longer existed in Europe. Skampis, as this fortress-town was once called, was founded in 1466 by two strikingly different leaders: the Roman emperor Justinian and Sultan Mehmet the Second. (updated Jul 2021)
• The Mosque is in the heart of the Castle and the other Mosque is in the city center [1].
• Elbasan Ethnographic Museum – Located in the centre of the city, not far from the Castle of Elbasan, this museum is housed in a traditional two-story 18th-century house that tells of the culture, folklore and lifestyle in this medieval city.
• Scampa – Theatre is the culture cult of Elbasan, in the entrance of it is a library.
• Shefqet Vërlaçi's house – He was a deputy and a member of the headship of Elbasan who supported the Albanian Independence in 1912.

• The first professional Albanian education school ever opened in Albania in 1909, Normalja Elbasanit. The intellectuals that came out of that school were lay out all around the Albanian areas spreading knowledge and giving Albanian language lessons. Now it's the Pedagogical school.

• Kostandin Kristoforidhi house (started as a museum in 1978) – The house where the scholar Konstandin Kristoforidhi was born. Kristoforidhi is well-known in Albania for having set the basis of unification of the two Albanian dialects into a national language. The house doesn't work yet as a museum and isn't visitable on the inside although discussions are being made to turn it into a museum.

• Take a stroll down the wide brick boulevard leading from the center of town past one of the castle walls and the clock tower. Most evenings right after dusk the boulevard is full of many Elbasan residents out for a nightly walk.

• Football: AF Elbasani play soccer in Kategoria Superiore, the top tier. They play at Elbasan Arena (capacity 12,800) 500 m east of town centre. KF Elbasani went bust in 2022.
• 1 Rafting in Shkumbin river (kind of sport), AST Albania (in the east city), ☏ . 09:00-12:00. Rafting is one of the most popular activities entertainment in Albania, which has been developed here as well river Shkumbin. The Shkumbin Valley has a special beauty rare with cataracts, caves, small beaches which you will if you have the opportunity to visit. In its northern part Shkumbini goes to areas with more radishes by adding speed and making it usable for rafting. Rafting starts from Kamara bridge (via egnatia) and ends near Elbasan city. €20 per person. (updated May 2024)
• Canyon of Valësh (Valësh Elbasan) (255M+3F2 Kanioni i Valëshit dhe Ura e Valëshit, Komuna, Gjinar). Valësh: Visit the Valësh Canyon and its 22-meter-high waterfall, estimated to be over 300 years old. A quiet, scenic spot for nature lovers. (updated May 2025)
• Church Shën e Premte (Kisha e Shën e Premtes), Valësh. Located in the village of Valësh, near Elbasan, is a hidden cultural gem nestled in the hills of the Shpati region. This small Orthodox church is not only a peaceful spiritual site but also an important piece of Albanian heritage.
  What makes it especially notable is that it contains frescoes attributed to Onufri, one of Albania’s most celebrated icon painters of the 16th century, known for his vivid colors and expressive religious imagery. • Hike the Via Egnatia. An ancient road constructed by the Romans in the 2nd century BCE that passes near Librazhd and Elbasan en route from Istanbul to Durrës.  (updated Oct 2025)

• 2 Kozani-8 thermal baths (along the Tirana-Elbasan highway). At least two bath houses with quiet hot waters (60°C and up). This is closer to Tirana than Elbasan but the facilities are maintained poorly. The springs that feeds the baths here is the hottest spring in Albania, even though it is actually a well where hot water was discovered by accident. (updated Dec 2021)

9 Llixhat (or Llixha) means thermal baths and they are located 12 km south of Elbasan. You can take a dip in the curative thermal waters or stay in one of the hotels and have a whole week of treatments.

There is a set of pools in the center of town. The rest are hotels from basic to luxurious, €15-25 per person per night, including thermal treatments—try Hotel Debrova ☏ , Hotel Cekrezi Qender ☏ , or Hotel Ylli ☏ . Check and inquire prices beforehand. If you come just for a visit, try Boci/Puka hotel, which might let you in for free for one cure.

There are shops, restaurants, post office and a market in town, so you don't have to bring much.

Note, there is another spa town a few km further south, called 10 Tregan, which has at least 3 central hot springs and around 4-5 big hotels.

• Bugaçe – A traditional Elbasan breakfast roll found nowhere else in Albania. Smothered in butter and with a dash of salt, this roll is delicious but not for those watching their cholesterol. Depending on the portion of it, bugaçe comes in different prices from 50 lekë to 100 lekë and is usually eaten warm in the morning.
• Ballakume – Another Elbasan speciality rarely found elsewhere in Albania. It is essentially a large sugar biscuit.They are made with corn flour,butter and sugar giving them a rich flavor and soft texture. While sold in stores all over the city, the best are always the freshly baked warm cookies. Also Ballokume is a dessert unique to Elbasan and is synonymous with the Summer Day.Its preparation is as follows: in a copper pot, special only for them, are put in order, beating with a wooden spoon, melted butter, crushed sugar, eggs one by one, yeast, corn flour and flour. The mass obtained by beating with a spoon is divided into parts in the form of round grains and put in the oven. Its secret is beating by hand and baking in a wood oven.

• Revani is also a traditional delicious dessert is a traditional dessert made with corn flour, butter, eggs, and figs, and it is prepared on the occasion of the traditional Dita e Verës celebration.
• Fuli is a traditional dessert from Elbasan, Albania, typically prepared to celebrate the birth of a child or a birthday within a family. Made with a simple combination of flour, sugar, butter, and eggs, it is flavored with vanilla or orange zest and baked until golden, creating a crispy outer layer and a soft, moist interior. Often enjoyed during special occasions and holidays, Fuli symbolizes local hospitality and is served in generous portions. This beloved dessert is a cherished part of Elbasan's culinary heritage, reflecting the region’s rich traditions and celebrations.

• 2 Byrek me mish dhe me gjizë (Traditional cooked food), Isak Shehu St.. A pie is a baked dish which is usually made of a pastry dough casing that contains a filling of various sweet or savoury ingredients. Sweet pies may be filled with fruit (as in an apple pie), nuts (pecan pie), fruit preserves (jam tart), brown sugar (sugar pie), sweetened vegetables (rhubarb pie), or with thicker fillings based on eggs and dairy (as in custard pie and cream pie). Savoury pies may be filled with meat (as in a steak pie or a Jamaican patty), eggs and cheese (such as quiches or British flans) or a mixture of meat and vegetables (pot pie). 50 lek.  (updated May 2024)
• Revanija is a traditional dessert made with corn flour, butter, eggs, and figs, and it is prepared on the occasion of the traditional Dita e Verës celebration.
• Fulia is a traditional Albanian dish prepared with thin layers of batter made from flour, water, and salt. Each layer is baked gradually and brushed with butter or cream between the layers. It is traditionally cooked over an open fire or in a special oven and is often served with yogurt, cheese, or honey. Fulia is especially popular during family gatherings and festive occasions.
• Qull me arra (Walnut Porridge)It is prepared with turkey, walnuts, a little flour, and butter. A certain amount of walnuts is crushed. Butter is heated, and the flour together with the crushed walnuts is lightly fried in it. Then, the broth from the roasted turkey is added, along with some crushed garlic and a little vinegar, and the mixture is left to boil. After boiling, it is divided into portions in small clay dishes and baked in the oven. Once baked, it is taken out of the oven and topped with pieces of roasted turkey meat.
• Tava me Pestil (Pestil Casserole)is a traditional winter dish, usually prepared with lamb and cooked in a clay baking dish. Besides the meat, the main ingredient is onion, which is finely chopped, mixed with salt and red pepper, then pressed by hand and spread across the baking dish. The meat, oil, a little rice, and pieces of pestil are added, and the dish is then baked in the oven.'
• Mysnik me kalastre "Mysnik with kalastre"Mysnik me Kalastre is a traditional dish, whose name comes from the Turkish language. It is prepared with free-range chicken, rice, butter, and various vegetables. After the kalastre is boiled in its own juices, the rice is cooked with butter and salt. Then, together with the boiled kalastre, it is placed in a baking tray and baked for about 30 minutes in a wood-fired oven. This traditional dish is so delicious that anyone who has tasted it is usually eager to return and enjoy Mysnik with Kalastre again.
• Yogurt casserole (Elbasani casserole)-Tave me kos Elbasani Tavë Elbasani is also known beyond the borders of Albania. It is prepared with lamb or goat meat, which is washed, salted, and drizzled with oil, then placed in a clay baking dish and baked in the oven.Once it is browned, it is taken out of the oven and left to cool slightly. A mixture prepared in a bowl with eggs, flour, and plenty of yogurt is then poured over it. The dish is returned to the oven and baked again until it develops a golden crust.After being baked, it is removed and served cold. It is most commonly consumed during the spring and summer seasons.

• Ashure is a very popular traditional dessert in Balkan and oriental cuisine, which is prepared especially during festive and family periods. It is prepared with a mixture of ingredients such as: boiled wheat (or softened wheat grains) sugar.Ashure has a thick texture and sweet taste, and is usually served cold. In many families it is prepared in large quantities and also distributed to relatives or neighbors as a sign of kindness and tradition.
• Narden kumbulle/ Plums juice are a unique variety of plum native to the region. Grown primarily in central Albania, these plums are prized for their rich flavor and are an important part of local agriculture. With a distinctive dark purple color and a sweet, tangy taste, Narden plums are typically harvested in late summer or early autumn.
  These plums are commonly used in traditional Albanian recipes, including jams, preserves, and pies. Their juicy flesh and slightly tart flavor make them ideal for turning into plum syrup or being dried for use in winter months. In rural areas, Narden plums are often enjoyed fresh, paired with local cheeses or served as a dessert after meals.
• Boze It is a thick, slightly sweet drink, prepared with fermented corn or wheat. It is consumed especially in the morning or in the cold seasons and is also very popular in Elbasan.
  The combination of boza with ice cream (sometimes known as "Boze-up") is one of the most traditional and refreshing summer desserts in Albania. The sour taste and thick texture of boza is perfectly balanced with the sweetness and coldness of ice cream.
  How to make it at homeThe preparation is very simple and takes only a few minutes Ingredients: Cold boze, 1-2 scoops of ice cream (usually vanilla or cream), and optionally a little cinnamon powder.Procedure:Take a large glass and place two scoops of ice cream at the bottom.Pour the cold boze on top until the glass is full.For a more special taste, sprinkle with a little cinnamon Boza dates back to ancient times, with evidence of its use in Mesopotamia about 9,000 years ago. During the Ottoman period, it became very popular throughout the empire, especially in Istanbul. From there it spread to the Balkans, where each country developed its own versions, such as Albanian, Bulgarian and Macedonian boza.
• Grape raki It is the most traditional drink for parties and family occasions. It is prepared by distilling grapes and is often produced at home in the areas around Elbasan.How is rakija made? The grape is collected from the vine. Then the pressing process begins. The grape is pressed by foot or machine. The pressed grape is collected in a barrel (iron or plastic) and left there without closing the lid completely and hermetically, in this state it will remain for several days until the raki flies approach to carry out the fermentation. During these 3-4 days when they have entered and the flies have done their job, you must stir it with a piece of wood 2 times a day. Then in the following days the barrel is closed hermetically so that it does not take in or out air and once a day the lid must be opened and stirred with the wood I mentioned above, after stirring quickly and quickly the lid is closed hermetically again (this is done because the barrel risks exploding like a bomb if it is not opened at least once a day). In this state it will stay for a minimum of 2 weeks, this is also depending on the weather because if it is hot, 2 weeks are enough and if it is cool, it should be left longer.After we have reached the end of the two-week period, we prepare the cauldron where the rakia will be boiled. The cauldron should preferably be made entirely of copper to produce high-quality rakia.

• Olive Oil-The Elbasan area, known for its long, sun-soaked hills covered in olive groves, produces some of Albania’s finest extra virgin olive oil. Thanks to its favorable Mediterranean climate and centuries-old traditions, the region offers high-quality, cold-pressed oil with a rich aroma and smooth flavor.

Visitors can purchase olive oil directly from local farmers or small processing facilities (fabrika vaji), especially in surrounding villages. Buying straight from the source ensures freshness and supports local producers, making it a perfect souvenir and a taste of authentic Albanian agriculture. You can find them in a shop close to the city center and near to Scampa theatre.

As March 2021 there are 2 buildings for guests: A dorm building with 8 beds and a small shed functioning as private room. Wifi available. Communal kitchen (outdoors), shower/WC (outdoors).
